How is Music a Gift to You? A Student’s Perspective
Happy Holidays from the Omaha Conservatory! Though this season is often known for being exceptionally busy and stressful, we thought there was no better time to slow down for a moment and ask members of our Conservatory community how music has been a gift to them throughout their lives. This three-part blog series will feature installments from an Artist-Faculty member, a parent, and a student. We are touched by their willingness to share their perspective, and we think you’ll enjoy reading three separate accounts tied together by a mutual love for the cherished art form of music.
This installment is written by Conservatory student Alleyah Flint, who studies at Omaha Conservatory of Music in the studio of Kathy Knebel. Thank you, Alleyah, for sharing your experiences and thoughtful words with us!
I personally think music is a huge gift to others and specifically my family. Music is always something my family and I have loved. I have been playing piano since I was 3 years old, giving me about 9 years of experience! Before that, music has always been a part of my life from my mom putting headphones to her belly when she was pregnant with me to my grandpa playing his old school music on full blast while making cakes. Piano has been a different way to express myself and has helped me grow into the person I am now. In addition to piano, I have been in a band called ‘Musical Kids’ since I was 5 years old. The group hosts a variety of different talents but ultimately, we are a group of kids that love to bring a little joy to an event. It has been so much fun learning about myself in this group and seeing what I am capable of! It even inspired me to join the Conservatory’s Voice Chamber Ensembles this past year! The experience has been amazing; I’ve found a voice I never knew I had!
Music has a lot of different emotions, and the fun part is it’s all up to you! Depending on how you play, what you play, and when you play it; you can do anything with music. If music from others doesn’t convey the emotions you want, you can write your own music! It’s a gift in itself that music is so limitless, you can do anything with it! You can even create your own instrument. No matter what, the way I see it, music will always be a huge gift for my family and I!
