Teacher Tips: The Importance of Counting
Counting and reading rhythms will make you the independent, confident player you want to become.
Count!
Count out loud and clap your rhythms. Count out loud as you play your rhythms. Count out loud while you practice with a metronome. Rhythm and counting are one of the most important aspects of being able to learn a piece of music or sight reading.
Don’t rely on on someone having to play the rhythm for you. Don’t rely on someone to count for you. Learn to read and count your rhythms. Don’t give up and say “I can’t count as I play”, just learn to do it. Learn to look at a measure and figure out where the beats are and how the subdivisions work.
